CDFNE's Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program is dedicated to providing 24/7 comprehensive trauma-informed forensic medical care to children, adolescents, and adults who have been a victim of sexual violence.
Sexual violence is never the fault of the victim. No matter the circumstances, what someone was wearing, where they were, or their relationship with the perpetrator, the responsibility for sexual
violence lies solely with the person who commits the act.
Being harmed by a partner or spouse is both traumatic and intimidating. We care about your safety and comfort and want to help you take the next step toward your well-being. When you’ve been harmed by someone you trust, seeking help can be scary. We’re here to give you confidential medical care in a safe and judgment-free environment.
An acute forensic medical exam is a specialized medical examination provided for survivors of sexual violence within 96 hours of the incident. The goal of an acute forensic medical exam is to provide compassionate trauma-informed care to the survivor while ensuring that forensic evidence is collected and preserved in a manner that is legally admissible. This helps survivors make informed decisions about pursuing legal action if they choose to do so, while also addressing their immediate medical and emotional needs.
An acute exam may include:
Remember, you have the right to decline any or all parts of the forensic medical exam.
A delayed forensic medical exam refers to a specialized medical examination provided for individuals who have experienced sexual violence, but the examination occurs after the 96-hour window. A delayed exam may be performed days, weeks, or even months after the incident. They can be important in cases where the survivor may not have initially realized the extent of their injuries, where they initially chose not to report, or when a child discloses abuse outside of the 96-hour timeframe. These exams aim to address the survivor's physical and emotional well-being and support the survivor in their recovery and pursuit of justice if they decide to take legal action.
CDFNE currently provides follow-up services at our Bismarck clinic. During a follow-up appointment, survivors receive individualized, supportive, trauma-informed care, from an advanced practice provider. This care often includes a medical assessment to monitor and manage any injuries sustained during the assault, a mental health assessment, testing
for and treating sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy testing, and referrals for a variety of services. Follow-up medical care for survivors
of sexual and intimate partner violence is essential to address both physical and emotional well-being, provide ongoing support, and address any potential health consequences resulting from the assault.
We are dedicated to providing specialized trauma-informed medical care for youth in the foster care system. We understand the unique challenges faced by these young individuals, many of whom have endured significant trauma, and we are here to support them on their journey.
Our comprehensive services include physical examinations, developmental screenings, dental assessments, eye exams, and nutritional evaluations to ensure each child receives holistic care. In addition, we assess injuries and offer referrals for specialized services such as mental health care and labs, recognizing that physical and emotional healing must go hand in hand.
